Life with Bella, My Cockapoo Assistance Dog
When my three-year-old German Shepherd died of a brain tumour, I had no intention of getting another dog. The loss was difficult, and I didn’t think bringing a puppy into my life was something I wanted or needed. However, shortly after his passing, my syncope attacks began, becoming more frequent and serious, eventually forcing me to give up my HGV licence of 25 years and placing me into medical reitirement. It became clear that I needed an assistance dog—not just a companion, but a partner who could support me during episodes, provide alerts, and help me regain independence and confidence in daily life.
When I visited the litter, I had my mind set on Bella’s sister, a calm puppy who seemed like the obvious choice, but Bella had other ideas. From the moment she approached, there was a spark of intelligence, energy, and presence that immediately stood out, and then she did something I will never forget: she walked over carrying a tiny soft Smurf in her mouth and dropped it at my feet, as if to say, “I choose you.” In that instant, I realised it wasn’t me choosing her—Bella had chosen me, and I couldn’t refuse.
I took her home at just ten weeks old, and from the very beginning, her loyalty, intelligence, and affectionate nature were undeniable. Training her as an assistance dog has been a journey of patience, consistency, and teamwork, and every day she grows more capable, anticipating my needs, supporting me during syncope episodes, and helping me maintain safety and independence.
Bella is playful, loving, and endlessly devoted, with the perfect balance of intelligence and gentleness that her Cockapoo breed brings. More than a service dog, she is my partner, my companion, and my constant source of joy and reassurance, in fact, I would go so far as to say she has become my daughter. Every day with Bella is a reminder that sometimes it isn’t about choosing the right dog—it’s about the dog choosing you, and she has chosen me in a way that has truly changed my life.
Bella’s capabilities go far beyond what most people expect from a dog. She retrieves my medication whenever I need it, ensuring I stay on track with my health, and she has an almost uncanny ability to sense when a syncope episode is coming. Her alerts give me time to prepare or get into a safe position, which has been invaluable in preventing accidents and maintaining my independence.
Her instincts are remarkable. She knows when I am in danger and will act accordingly. I’ll never forget the time at university when I had to climb two flights of stairs to reach the library. As we started walking, I began to feel the onset of an attack. Bella immediately lay down on the floor and refused to move, staying perfectly still until I was secure. Her ability to recognise danger before it happens is nothing short of extraordinary.
Bella has also learned practical tasks that make daily life much easier. She can open doors, which allows me to navigate my home and other environments with confidence. Simple actions like this mean I can live more independently, knowing she is always ready to assist me. Every task she performs is a combination of training, intelligence, and instinct.
Beyond her practical skills, Bella provides constant reassurance. Her presence is calming, and her unwavering loyalty gives me confidence to go about my day even when I feel vulnerable. Whether it’s alerting me to danger, fetching essential items, or simply staying close when I need her, Bella demonstrates every day why she is not just an assistance dog, but a true partner in life.
